In the Spring of 1991, the idea of having a sorority with an Asian interest was conceived after Beta Omega Phi Little Sister program started. What began as just "small talk" came into being after a few of the Alpha class little sisters decided that having their own unity of sisterhood would be a great way to grow and bond together. Since these girls had previously known each other and had the same interests in mind, they decided to fulfill their objective by seeking out sororities that would match their values and ideals. These three women began to embark on a journey to find that one sorority that could unite them all. Through their research they met with Carolyn Wen of the University of Southern California, Alpha Chapter of Sigma Phi Omega. After discussing the sorority at length, they knew in their hearts that this was the sorority to join. The girls had planned a "Rush" event and recruited on the campus of UCSD. There they met the last of the group that would eventually come together to become known as the "Charter Members" of the San Diego State University, Delta Chapter of Sigma Phi Omega.
